What is a wildlife sanctuary?

People often hear the phrases "wildlife refuge" or "wildlife sanctuary". However, when people hear these phrases, they usually think of larger wildlife reserves such as the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Gujarat state of India. They may be surprised to realize that there many wildlife sanctuaries in the world. These sanctuaries are both big and small. Some only have a few animals while others have several thousand.

Wildlife sanctuaries are spaces set aside for the use by feral animal species. Wildlife refuges are either government owned or owned privately. Wildlife sanctuaries are not even always man-made. Some come into existence naturally. Wildlife sanctuaries have other focuses including rehabilitation, wild release, education, emergency care, public education, shelter, and partnership.

Wildlife refuges are not new. In fact, the very first wildlife sanctuary came around 300 BC when King Devanampiya Tissa of Sri Lanka created a wildlife sanctuary near Mihintale. King Devanampiya Tissa banned hunting and cutting trees in that area. Wildlife refuges came much later to the United States. In the early 20th century, President Teddy Roosevelt started the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge just off the western coast of Orchid Island in the Indian River Lagoon east of the Florida peninsula. He started that sanctuary in order to protect ergots. Plume hunters seriously threatened ergots in that area at the time. Today, the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge holds thousands of different species.

Since then, many non-profit wildlife sanctuaries were created in the US and other nations in the world. In the United States, many of the wildlife sanctuaries are regulated by the American Sanctuary Association.

An example of a wildlife sanctuary is the Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jacksonville, Florida. Catty Shack Ranch helps rescue and provide a safe habitat to endangered wildcat species that are threatened due to a loss of natural habitat. Catty Shack currently has Siberian tigers, lions, cougars, spotted and black leopards, a serval, a coatimundi, a European wild cat, an arctic fox, and many other different animals.

Catty Shack and other wildlife refuges sometimes operate similar to a zoological park. They often allow visitors to come view and even feed the animals.

Most wildlife refuges allow animals to roam freely. However, some have to cage animals because of safety issues and space constraints. Some sanctuaries allow people to adopt animals by donating resources. Some wildlife sanctuaries are heavily underemployed and have to rely on volunteer labor.

Researches often visit wildlife sanctuaries. However, they are strictly forbidden from significantly interfering with the animals' lives.

Many wildlife refuges also provide weekend and after-school educational programs for elementary school, middle school, high school students, and even adults.
