Mocidade Independente Samba-school: From the 1960s to today
Mocidade Independente Padre Miguel has become over the last two decades, one of the most cherished in Rio de Janeiro, and amassed several Carnival championship titles. The samba-school founded 60 years ago, has proven that when luxury meets extraordinary organization and industry type methodology, brilliant parades are produced. Mocidade Independente is also a synonym to legendary Carnival Producers: Some of the most important all time artists from the Brazilian festivity came from Mocidade studios: Arlindo Rodriguez, Fernando Pinto and Renate Lage. Let´s take a look below at Mocidade´s history, personalities, muses, photos and important symbols.
Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel Samba-School was founded by Sílvio Trindade, Renato da Silva, Djalma Rosa, Olímpio Bonifácio (Bronquinha), Garibaldi F. Lima, Felipe de Souza (Pavão), Altamiro Menezes (Cambalhota) and Alfredo Briggs. Their first flag was offered by Gilda Faria Lima, being the first queen of the school Neusa de Oliveira.
The fifties:
In 1955, the soccer team became a street band participating of the street band competition in Padre Miguel promoted by the late politician Waldemar Vianna de Carvalho. As there was a tie between Mocidade and Unidos de Padre Miguel, Waldemar solved the problem in a diplomatic manner, considering Mocidade as a samba school and giving the award for that category and Unidos de Padre Miguel as a street band awarding them for that category.
In 1956 they presented the theme "Castro Alves", again at a local parade. Participating for the first time on the official parade in Rio in 1957 with the theme "O Baile das Rosas", they achieved the 5th place. In 1958, Mocidade was champion of the Second Group with the theme "Apoteose ao Samba". From 1959 onwards, Mocidade Independente Padre Miguel finally went to the Elite Samba group in Rio, never returning to the second.
The sixties:
In 1959, the Drum section, under the baton of legendary Master André, used for the first time the famous "paradinha", in front of the judging commission, maintaining the rhythm so that the samba-school could keep evolving. The people would later begin to follow the "paradinha" with a cheer of "Olé". During this period, Mocidade was known by its amazing Drum Section that carried the school's weight. This vibrant drum section, achieved a status Brazil wide even more important than the samba-school as whole. Only a few years later that Mocidade would finally start to compete head-to-head with the great samba schools such as Portela, Império Serrano, Salgueiro and Mangueira.
The seventies:
On the year of 74, Arlindo Rodrigues presented the theme "A festa do Divino" achieving 5th place. From this point onwards, the school would stop being known only for its drum section, beginning to be recognized as a great samba school. In 1976, by irony of destiny, Mocidade tied with Mangueira in second place and lost the second place due to the lack of a 10 in the drum section score. In 1979, still with Arlindo Rodrigues as Carnaval producer, Mocidade conquered their first championship the theme "O Descobrimento do Brasil". On the following year, Carnaval producer Fernando Pinto took over the school producing exceptional Carnivals in Mocidade samba school and projecting himself as one of the most creative and inventive Carnaval producers in business. On his first year, Fernando Pinto achieved the second place with the theme "Tropicália Maravilha".
The eighties:
In 1983, Mocidade received an award as the best to communicate with the audience with the theme "Come era verde o meu Xingu". Fernando remained at the school until 1988 and made great Carnaval parades in Mocidade during the 80's. In 1985 he gave the school his first title with the theme "Ziriguidum 2001". This year Mocidade paraded thinking of the "Carnaval of the future", of the next century.
Renato Lage´s era and the death of Patron Castor de Andrade
In 1990, the school would begin to be commanded by Carnaval producer Renato Lage who helped the school conquer the Carnival Contest titles in three years: in 1990, telling their own story with the theme "Vira Virou, a Mocidade Chegou"; in 1991 talking about water in the theme "Chuê, Chuá... As Águas Vão Rolar"; and in 1996 with the parade theme "Criador e Criatura", about the creation of humanity.
The nineties end:
In 1997, Mocidade lost their greatest patron, Castor de Andrade. Two years later, the school made an exquisite parade, with a well deserved tribute to Villa-Lobos, with the theme "Villa-Lobos e a Apoteose Brasileira". The public cheered with the parade. However, this year a disappointment took place: Mocidade that had always concentrated beside the post office had to concentrate in front of a building called "Balança mas Não Cai", near which there is a viaduct that often obstruct the samba-school floats. In this case, it wasn't different and the school had a delay in placing people on top of the floats, which opened a huge hole between sectors 1 and 3 right at the beginning of the Sambadrome.
In the year 2000, Mocidade came literally dressed with the colors of Brazil, presenting the theme "Verde, Amarelo, Azul-Anil Colorem o Brasil no Ano 2000". The beautiful and imposing opening wing float, a giant spaceship of the "Indians of the future", showed what the school would bring to the parade. The school paraded well, but the samba music didn't vibrate with the crowd as they thought. The school achieved a 4th place, and was able to parade at the champion´s parade, on the following Saturday. After 2002, Carnaval producer Renato Lage left the school. After Renato Lage's era In 2003, the Carnaval producer Chico Spinoza took over the school´s artistic style, and brought to the avenue themes with a social imprint such as donations of organs and education. In 2005, with the change in the board of directors, Mocidade hired a Carnaval producer with a classical characteristic: Paulo Menezes. His Carnaval made people remember Arlindo Rodrigues' forms; however school achieved only the 9th place.
For the 2009 parade, Mocidade brought Carnaval producer Cláudio Cebola that was previously part of the Carnaval committee and was promoted to official Carnaval Producer of the school. The theme would be a tribute to the hundredth years of the writer Machado de Assis' death at first, but was then changed with the inclusion of Brazilian legendary writer Guimarães Rosa to the theme, ending up being a great fiasco.
Being the last school to choose their theme, Mocidade faced a couple of troubles in this process: They chose a samba song with unconventional characteristics, not pleasing the majority of the samba community. As a result, its Carnival Director João Luiz Azevedo left the school amidst chaos. At the end, the school achieved the 11th place once again, getting close to demotion to Access Group. With its ups and down, Mocidade Independente Samba-school has an impressive force within Brazil´s Carnival and is definitely located amongst the 5 most important samba-schools in the country.
