Memories: The Ties That Bind
My dad will be visiting me for the weekend. I'll meet him shortly after his plane lands at Bob Hope Airport. With a sharp smile and silver hair at 61, this year is destined to be a very happy and exciting period in his life. Just announcing his retirement last summer, he'll resign from his dental practice partnership based in downtown Duluth, sell his house and move to southward, along with my stepmom, to the very place I was born and raised; Alexandria, Minnesota.<!--more-->
Great! Now my family will live only 1,850 miles from my apartment. To be honest though, I found their move to be a little questionable at first. Alexandria is another speck on the map with not much to do except ice fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and getting drunk on occasion. Every resident, mostly Norwegian, knows each other by name and believes in the local legend of the town having been founded by Vikings. Sometimes I don't know how I managed to live there for 21 years. It's no place for an ambitious, cultured intellectual like myself. Of course, I got those traits from my father, which led me to ask him and my stepmom on more than one instance, "Why would you ever even consider moving to that sty of a town again?" He always gave the same answer; "Because we share the best memories of our family there."
His reason for moving back to my former hometown is kind of a difficult concept for me to understand at times, but as each week passes since the day I left my parents' sphere of influence for the first time in my life, the more I understand why my dad stands by it. Although I was used to living on my own during and after my college years in Duluth, my parents were settled only 30 miles north from where I was. My sister still resides in the Twin Cities, and all it took for me was a quick drive south on 1-35 to catch up with her. I don't have too many close relatives outside of the state and never lived as far away from my entire family as I am now.
At the time I announced my fateful job offer from my current employer based in southern California, every emotion imaginable dominated my parents; astonishment, happiness, gratitude, guilt, anxiety, fear, hope, acceptance, and finally topped off with faith. Every image and memory about me they held dear flashed before their eyes. The story about my recovery from autism takes anyone not familiar with it by total surprise. To them, I'm just another twenty-something trying to find his place in this complicated, evolving world of ours. Being a parent to a child with autism can be painfully difficult and heart-breaking to accept, but through constant prayer and perseverance, my mom and dad raised me above and beyond the high expectations of exceptional parenting, wishing and even demanding the very best out of anything I set my heart to. They appeared to be a little overprotective at times, but in doing so they displayed a strong symbol of tough yet unconditional love. Now that this incredible opportunity laid in front of me, flowing with numerous possibilities as vast and endless as the Pacific Ocean itself, I became aware of my parents' true intentions for me; The two and a half decades of delicate support and care gone into raising me had prepared us for this very moment. Now I had truly defied every assumption the medical professionals placed on me before my treatment at UCLA. The frightened little boy who couldn't speak, acknowledge his family or play with his toys suddenly grew into an independent and determined young man armed with dreams and ambitions for a establishing a better future for himself and his loved ones. Thus the circle of life continues to turn.
My dad and stepmom held back their tears of joy as they wished me well on my newfound journey of self-discovery. Though we are now separated in terms of geographic distance, we will never be separated in heart and spirit. Memories tie people together and make instances, both profound and subtle, seem like yesterday. Dad's decision to settle back in Alexandria is a choice I can fully encourage now. Watching a child defeat autism and develop into a matured individual with limitless potential is a wish that any family affected by ASD desires more than anything else, with makes me all the prouder to work for an ABA provider as determined and supportive as my family was to me.
