Bosch Jigsaw 1590EVSK Review | Most Bang For The Buck
I got one of these for Christmas and what everyone says about it is true. I had a thirty year old [middle of the line to be fair] Craftsman Jigsaw that could never cut a straight or clean line and vibrated like crazy which left me with the impression that a jigsaw is a tool of last resort. That has now changed with the 1590EVSK and it is now my tool of first resort for most sawing decisions. When I first opened the case to my Bosch I said "lets see what she can do". I put in a Bosch blade [it comes with assortment of three] and got a scrap of 2x4 to crosscut. My old jig saw would have choked on that big time. Well the 1590EVSK zipped right through it - WOW and left a clean cut. Then I drew a wandering line on a piece of 1x6 and put in a fine cut blade and it and I was able to follow that line and cut smoothly like a dream. I am going to put in some Pergo floor soon and was wondering how I was going to rip planks of it. Yes I could use a circular saw but that is a bit scary and requires clamping to do it safely [my wife works with someone that cut their hand pretty bad doing it incorrectly with a circular saw]. Now I plan to use the 1590EVSK with a blade that will do laminate and an edge guide or clamped on guide which can easily be done on site.
The 1590EVSK just oozes quality, durability, and engineering. It is not cheap compared to other jig saws but for what it can do it could easily be the most used saw in the arsenal of a do it your self guy/gal or handyman doing a lot of duty that a circular saw used to do and in a safer manner and therefore be a great investment. Be sure to use Bosch blades in it as they are top notch and worth every penny. Blade changes take about five seconds if you are clumsy. Oh by the way the reviewer down the list must have bought the lower priced Bosch Jigsaw that is indeed made in China and is still a highly regarded jigsaw. I did email Bosch and they assured me that as of the date of this review the 1590EVSK is still made in their plant in Switzerland. If you are in the market for a quality jigsaw that is extremely versatile you will not regret purchasing the 1590EVSK no matter how little or how much you plan to use it and if you register at Bosch's website they currently will extend the warranty to three years for it.
Running down the list:
* Yes, very tight scroll cuts. No, you can't twist the blade violently to make a 90 degree cut. That's just common sense physics and not what people mean by "square" cuts. It does plunge cut quite nicely with the the right blade though. If the blade is wandering on you, press the big shiny red button and read the manual fer cryin' out loud. I didn't even have one and I figured out what you needed to lock down the precision control mechanism.
* It couldn't be easier or more obvious how to change blades if a little gnome hopped out of a hole in the gearbox and did it for you. Seriously.
* It's the right weight in my opinion which aids in control and stability but most people would get tired fast using it on walls or ceilings. Get a JS5 or dig deep for the festool if you need a lighter saw for this purpose or just get a sawzall if you don't need a clean cut.
* As far as bevel control, straight and 45 degree bevel cuts are really easy to set up because there are indentations you can slide the foot back on for these settings. You can set up any angle in between but it probably takes a little trial and error to get precision out of this. The surfaces that come into contact are rough (probably to hold tighter when locked) so you basically have to loosen it enough for them to not be in contact which is kind of wobbly and clumsy. It's a minor but standout gripe in an otherwise near-perfectly engineered tool and the friction that makes a smooth adjustment tricky is probably also part of what keeps the setting rock solid when you lock it down. That is IF you know there is a lever and a dial for locking/unlocking and tightening/loosening. That's another RTFM issue some people are missing, I suspect.
* I have no idea why you would need variable speed trigger control on it. It's too smooth of an operator to need a soft start and I would anticipate no trouble continuing an aborted cut. It's not going to jerk around on you when you start it up again. I think Bosch's engineers were reasonable in assuming you'd be cutting one type of material at a time with it so why would you need to adjust speed as you go?
* Blower works great. The dust collection attachment looks like it will work well but I haven't had a chance to purchase/try it yet.
* As for longevity/toughness: I got mine fairly heavily used. The beat-up case and marks and wood glue gunked up on the saw suggest quite a bit of use from an on-site contractor who wasn't a very light touch. Also some abuse/misuse: there are scratch marks on the foot-loosening dial that suggest he didn't RTFM either and the blade in it is pretty seriously scorched for the edge its teeth are still holding. In spite of all this, I can't imagine the saw ever worked better than it does now.
* Controls: 3 orbital settings or no orbital on one switch. Blower toggle. Precision guide toggle. Foot locking lever for locking in a new bevel setting. Foot loosening/tightening dial for setting the bevel before locking the foot again. Speed control in the back where it could be a touch awkward to reach for during use but I don't see why you would need to. Nonvariable speed trigger with a rightie/leftie-friendly trigger lock that would come in handy if you want to mount it upside down to use like a scroll saw table.
* Cuts that you won't have to sand if you use the right blades. You can credit the dual-edge-cutting miracle blades Bosch makes for this (I was using one of the older ones) but the negligible vibration and control the saw gives you can't hurt.
I can't tell you this is the best jigsaw, not having tried its immediate competitors but I can certainly say it's a 5-star experience and much better than not going wrong. Definitely worth spending the extra bucks over some black & decker POS and the JS5 is probably better than any disposable consumer grade model if the cost is an issue for you.
