In youth sports, the focus is very commonly on improving skills, fitness and tactics of our young charges. Yes, we need to make sports fun for kids, but increasingly, preparing mentally for games must also be looked into if we want to have good results. Furthermore, these form of mental skills can be carried on to other aspects of their lives. At this level, sports psychology need not be complex and difficult for youth to understand. Here are some simple thing you can do with your your charges to make them better players and people.
1) Goal Setting. Keep this simple. Ask any child whether he/she wants to win or not, and the answer is always a resounding 'yes'. It is natural for children to want to win, and we should do our most to encourage them. When setting goals, do it at different stages. Set goals at the start of the season, and be sure to get parents involved. Make your season goals straight forward and relate to past seasons if possible. If your team only won 3 out of 10 games, challenge your charges to win maybe five in a new season. Award star stickers on team posters whenever they win a game and make sure this poster is visible. outside your locker room or something like that. This form of constant visual reminder will motivate children to work harder. At each training session, give the team a simple goal for that session. "Today in practice, our goal is let as few goals in as possible." Keep the goal simple and easily understood, and constantly zoom in on this objective and theme throughout the session. Finally at individual level, give each player 3 goals to work on during the season. These goals can be changed once they have achieved them at some point in the season. Simple goal setting is easy to do and is effective for youth sports. You will be surprise how good your players will respond to all these small gaols.
2) Create simple routines for practice and matches. Routines reduces chances of unexpected things happening that will disrupt the focus of players on their plays. Without routines, players can be subjected many distractions. At youth levels, people tend to forget or overlook things. Forgetting to bring equipment, eating wrong food before games, being easily distracted by others, etc. Having routines will not eliminate all distractions, but it will reduce the chances of them occurring, thus allowing the players to focus on their game. Create routines using check lists will help. Here are 3 check lists you can start with.
a) Checklist for equipment
b) A programme list for training of match day
c) Checklist of objectives
Print this out and distribute them to all players. Insist that they all bring for different occasions. If they do not, bench them for a practice or a match. That should do the trick and send a strong signal to the whole team that you are serious about checklists and routines. After a while, your players will be able to internalize all these routines and it will help them improve their plays.
An example of a programme list for match day is as follow;
0700 Breakfast
0800 Equipment Check
0830 Depart for match
0930 Arrive at match venue
1000 Self relaxation
1030 Team talk
1130 Final preparation
1200 Suit up for game
1230 Final Pep Talk
1300 Game time
You can create as many checklists or routines as you like. Do bear in mind that children work best with fewer routines and lists. You can rotate and prioritize your lists and get your players to focus on just a few at any one time.
