Cool as a Mercedes-benz Fan Clutch
About four thousand controlled explosions happen inside the engine every minute that it is running. The spark plug of the ignition system ignites the fuel mixture in each cylinder to propel the vehicle down the road. These chemical explosions produce enormous amounts of heat. As it flows along thin tubes, the hot liquid is cooled by the air stream entering the engine compartment from the front grill. Once cooled, the liquid returns to the engine to absorb more heat. Basically, the engine heat is gradually circulated to different areas through the use of a heat-absorbing coolant. A particular device that proves to be an integral component of the automotive cooling system is the fan clutch. Thermostatically controlled, this device mainly function as an efficient temporary substitute for the engine's mechanically-driven radiator cooling fan. This saves power since the engine does not have to fully drive the fan. As hot temperature continues to arise, the fan clutch becomes fully engaged drawing a higher volume of cool air through the car's radiator which prevent it from overheating. They are generally located at the front of the water pump and driven by a belt and pulley connected to the engine's crankshaft.
