Stop Being Nervous When Driving And Conquer Your Driving Phobia

A driving phobia involves feelings of high stress and extreme anxiety when operating a motor vehicle. Individuals who suffer from a fear of driving might feel even more scared on the freeway due to the extreme fast speeds.

I used to get extremely nervous when driving on the freeway; especially if I was driving long distances. I would feel a sort of panic on the freeway since the road ahead looked never ending with tons of curves everywhere. At times the lights of the opposing traffic would almost blind me and I would feel dizzy and stricken with intense anxiety. The unexpected curves would scare the heck out of me and on top of that, the majority of fellow drivers would speed at 80 mph and some would even aggressively tailgate me when I wasn't going fast enough for them!

Luckily I learned to overcome my fear and stopped feeling scared when driving. Part of it had to do with the fact that I landed a job that was around 20 miles away and I had no choice but to confront my fear of driving head on. A lot of people think that you need to take dangerous drugs like anti-anxiety meds or indulge in pricey therapy to get rid of your driving phobia, but this isn't the case at all. Your brain has simply associated the act of operating a motor vehicle with danger and disaster for some unknown reason. However, it's possible for you to train your mind to overcome that illogical thought.

Here are a few tips to help you stay relaxed. Try to drive at a pace that you feel comfortable with. Even if others are racing by you don't have to drive as fast if it makes you feel uncomfortable. If someone tailgates you move over to the right lane and if they still continue to tailgate you either change lanes or just let it be; it's their problem. Try to take deep breaths and try to keep your muscles loose and not tight. Soothing music that you enjoy could possibly help.

Having a fear of driving can really hinder you in life. However, with a lot of dedication and patience, you can surely beat the nervous freeway jitters!
