Flight News On AVEX Air Show 2010 Held In Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport,Egypt ,Where Business Jets Were Aplenty On Display

With the international support apparent at the AVEX Air Show held at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport, in Egypt, recently, coupled with the presence of a large number of both civilian and military delegations, all indications are that this biennial event is gaining in importance as a regional exhibition which is challenging the dominance of other similar shows in Africa and the Middle East.

All the major aircraft manufacturers were there with Airbus stealing the limelight by bringing its "Super Jumbo" A380 to mark its first flight to North Africa and its first landing in Egypt. In doing so, Airbus joined the other 73 main exhibitors from around the world to make the show a resounding success.

Habib Fekih, president of Airbus in the Middle East, said that the 555-passenger A380 was taking part in the 2010 AVEX as an acknowledgement of the significance of the air show in Africa and the Middle East.

Airbus organized orientation tours of the A380 for AVEX visitors and also made a trip to Cairo International Airport and back during which it flew over the pyramids.

Not to be outdone, Boeing also had a strong presence at the show promoting among others the Dream liner and B747-8i.The company's aircraft are seen in the colours of most North African airlines.

Other major manufacturers which came from 16 countries to take part included (in alphabetical order) Bell Helicopter Textron, Bombardier Aerospace, Cessna, Dassault Aviation, Embraer, General Electric Aviation, Gulfstream Aerospace, Hawker Beech Craft Corporation, Rolls Royce and Thales. Smaller companies, to them their contributions just as important, pushed the total number of exhibitors to close to 00, not surprisingly the majority being from Egypt. The flags of France, Turkey, England, The USA, Lebanon, Iraq, Germany, Bahrain, Italy, Malta, Sudan, Pakistan, Spain, Libya and the UAE all flew over the exhibition grounds.

Main sponsor and national flag carrier, Egypt Air Ground Services, Tourism and Tax Free Shops, and Egypt Air Medical Services, used the exhibition to announce major expansion plans.

The airline has signed a contract with renowned Egyptian companies in the fields of restraint and cafeteria management to operate nine cafeterias and restaurants at Borg El-Arab International Airport, which has acurrent capacity of 1, 2 million passengers a year but plans to increase this to around five-million passengers annually.

On the other hand, Egypt Air for Tourism and Tax Free Shops achieved its highest sales target during October 2010 with a total of us$17-million, of which us$5-million were generated from Sharm Elsheikh Airport alone.

Bizjets Aplenty

Most corporate jet aircraft manufacturers took the opportunity of the show to display their latest models. Gulfstream, for example, brought its current flagship, the G550 to the show, but also promoted the other aircraft in its stable to the lucrative Middle Eastern and North African markets.

Brazilian manufacturers, Embraer, promoted its full line of commercial and executive jets, as well as its complementary range of customer services and solutions. In the static display, Embraer showcased the Phenom 300 light executive jet, which made its first appearance in the region, together with the Embraer 190 commercial jet in Bahrain's Gulf Air livery.

The company claims to be the worlds largest manufacturer of commercial jets up to 120 seats, offering the traditional ERJ 145 family ( up to 50 seats) and the Embraer 170/190 E-jets family (70 to 170 seats).

Nearly 900 ERJ 145 family regional jets have been delivered, and 56 airlines in 39 countries have placed more than 900 firm orders for the E-jets.

"Bringing the Phenom 300 jet to AVEX for first time will give visitors and customers the opportunity   to experience Embraers newest state-of-the-art executive jets and see the avant-garde features and technologies previously said Colin Steven, Embraer vice-president ,marketing and sales of executive jets in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Hawker Beech craft Corporation (HBC) also took part at the AVEX show. During the biennial expo, HBC and its local distributor, Premier Aviation, jointly hosted guests at HBCs chalet, as well as showcasing its flagship aircraft, the Hawker 4000.

With its innovative composite construction, the Hawker 4000 is claimed by the company to be the worlds most advanced business jet, delivering an exceptional combination of speed, climb performance and range.

"The region continues to show great interest in our entire product line-up, particularly the Hawker business jets and King Air turboprops" said Sean McGeough, HBC president, Europe, Middle East and Africa."In fact, Hawker Beech craft leads the turboprop market with more than a 65% share in the region."

Most recently, the company received certification of its King Air 350i in Egypt. Now equipped with the Rockwell Collins venue cabin management system and state-of-the-art Beechcarft Flex Cabin capability, the King Air 350i sets the standard in cabin comfort.

Bombardier was at the AVEX International Air Show in force with aircraft ranging from its innovative Learjet and Challenger families.

On display was the Learjet 60 in its latest form, the XR, which, the company claims,"is a model of performance, comfort, value and versatility in the mid-size jet market." The aircrafts higher operating altitudes –certified to 51000 better winds, less traffic and less turbulence.

Also promoted at the show was the Challenger 300 which Bombardier also claims as the "first true super-midsize aircraft" offering transcontinental range and superior long-range cruise speed, with eight passengers.

It can fly from Sharm El Sheikh to any European destination non-stop with a full payload and its airfield performance allows it to operate out of 1525-metre runways with ease. The aircraft is said to have dispatch reliability consistently over 99, 7%.

These were but four of the bizjet manufacturers to display their products, Cessna and Dassualt, for example, being others which also were dynamic in the promotion of their aircraft.

AVEX Awards

One of the highlights of the show was the announcement of the AVEX Custom Jet show awards.

Petroff Air, a private aircraft operator and management company, scooped the top award for "Best Customized Aircraft Interior" for its outstanding interior design of the privately owned Boeing 737-7JF.

Dina Tkacheva, developmemt director of Petroff Air, said that the entire team had contributed to the finished aircraft."We put our heart and soul and time in."She referred to partners such as Boeing and Green point Technologies "who changed their life style for us and moved back and forth between Russia and the US to realize this dream."

Tkacheva explained that the US$85-million customized jet is owned by a Russian businessman who just gave them "the broad outlines of his dream interior design and the whole team worked on putting together the best of everything."

Held on the sidelines of the AVEX International Air Show 2010, the Custom Jet Show honored outstanding achievements and breakthroughs in the categories of aircraft interior and livery design.

For its latest model, the Bell 429, Bell Helicopters gained the award for the "Best Customized Livery Design" which recognizes the most outstanding livery design on an aircraft at the Custom Jet Show on the creative and modern use of design elements, colour usage and overall paint scheme.

Among the nominees were Small Planets Boeing 737-300, Petroff Airs Boeing 737-7JF and Smart Aviations Cessna Citation Sovereign C-680

The awards were offered by the French studio: Happy Design. Each winner received a night blue 1: 100 scale model of the Concorde covered with 450 real diamonds.

A French jeweler set the diamonds by hand  and gave the trophies a diamond value of 1 carat per trophy .They are arranged in such  a way as  to create  a Milky Way livery for each trophy.

Taking plain vanilla aircraft and personalizing them to cater to their owners or users every whim is an emerging trend in the Middle East and North Africa regions private and executive aviation markets.

So high is  the demand that the industry has rapidly grown in size and scope and spans a range of sectors, from bespoke interiors and personalized liveries, in-flight  entertainment and onboard connectivity, to fully equipped bathrooms and kitchens with the capacity to prepare restaurant quality food in-flight.
