Steps to Clean the Fuel Pump
- Firstly, determine how much of fuel you have roughly. You can check this by the fuel indication meter. But if it is not working properly or you doubt the functioning of it, assume that the fuel tank is fuel and have sufficient contains on hand to drain fuel from the tank.
- Next, disconnect the battery negative lead.
- Lift the rear of the vehicle using a jack or on jack stands for more safety purposes.
- If the automobile is outfitted with a cover for the fuel pump which is placed at the bottom of the fuel tank remove the pump cover. Place the fuel line going from the bottom of the fuel tank to the suction of the fuel pump. And then use a hose clamp to pinch the rubber fuel line.
- Relax the hose clamp at the suction of fuel pump using a screwdriver and get the hose disconnected from the pump. There you have to e ready to catch any fuel that drain from the fuel pump and the fuel line. Keep a container underneath the fuel line and relax the clamp to make flow the fuel from the tank. When that container is full fix the clamp again while you pace another empty container again. Repeat the procedure until all the fuel is drained. You will be able to re use that fuel if you use clean containers.
- After finishing the draining of fuel, remove the hose from the tank outlet nozzle using a screwdriver.
- Then you will find a hex head at the base of the nozzle.
- Next, remove the nozzle and the strainer assembly using a deep socket and ratchet by turning counter clockwise direction. In this step also some small quantity of fuel that was trapped in strainer would be removed.
- After getting the strainer out, examine whether there are any wreckages. Be careful when you clean the strainer. Blowing low pressure is another way to clean the strainer safely. If you have any damages while cleaning, then you should replace the strainer. Install a new O-ring on the strainer and coat it with some lubricant material.
- Then, set up the strainer again and tighten it. Attach the fuel line to the nozzle of the strainer and fuel pump.
- Finally refill the fuel tank and check out the functioning of strainer and fuel lines to make sure there are no leaks. If there was a one, install the fuel cover. Then remove the vehicle from jacks or stands.
