1. Read the Manual - How many times have we bought things, but were so eager to use the equipment, we just glanced at the manual before starting it up? This generally happens with electronic devices. I mean, how difficult is it to use a TV, stereo, or cell phone? Well, once we turn them on, we see that most new devices have digital functions, and do require a learning curve to get started.
However, if you don't read you unit's manual, there could be many dangers associated with using it incorrectly. Just get into the habit of learning how to use your portable gas generator safely.
2. Get Proper Ventilation - There are a lot of fumes produced by these units. Even when you are outdoors, it's possible to smell them. Without proper ventilation, carbon monoxide poisoning is a real possibility. You should never run a portable gas generator indoors. Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer. You can't see it, and cannot smell it, but it can quickly kill a person in an area with little or no ventilation.
3. Gasoline is Dangerous - The fumes from gasoline can ignite in a minute, causing your portable gas generator to catch fire, and anything else that is flammable nearby. If you're transporting gasoline around, just a little spark can cause it to ignite. Also, if an area is too hot, or gets too much sunlight, gasoline will also ignite. You should transport as little gasoline around as necessary, and keep it in a cool place.
4. Be Careful When Standing Near a portable gas generator - There are parts that move around, and it's possible to get fingers, or limbs caught up in your portable generator. You should remove all jewelry, especially necklaces, or dangling earrings when working around a portable gas generator. You should also avoid any loose fitting clothes.
5. Danger of Electrical Shock - Only use your unit under dry conditions. The generator and its surroundings should be dry to prevent electrical shock. Also, don't try to use a portable gas generator to supply power to your home during an electrical outage. Most portable gas generators are not strong enough to power an entire house. Instead, use a standby generator that works for homes.Finally, check the power cords that you are connecting to your portable gas generator. There should not be any tears, or breaks that expose wiring.
