The founder of Honda, Soichiro Honda primary interest was in cars. Starting out as a self-taught engineer one of his first designs was a piston he wanted to sell to Toyota. After rejection he improved his piston design and won the contract to make pistons for Toyota.

Soichiro constructed a factory to build the pistons for Toyota but before it got off the ground it was destroyed by earthquake. World War II created a gas shortage Soichiro Honda came up with the idea of attaching a small engine to his bicycle. The idea created so much curiosity that he started the Honda Technical Research Institute to design and build small 2 stroke engines for motorbikes.

Soichiro enlisted the help of over 18,000 bicycle shop owners to help revitalize Japan after the war. This helped Soichiro build enough capital to design and build his first motorcycle called the "Honda Cub". This began the Honda Motor Company that grew into the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles by 1964.

The introduction of the C100 Super Cub or Honda 50 better known as the Honda Cub was powered by a 4 cycle 49 cc engine. The popularity has kept the motorbike in production since its introduction in 1958. There is more than 60 million of the Honda Cubs worldwide making it the best selling motorbike in the world.

The reason the Honda Cub was so popular was that it was and still is affordable transportation. It was and still is reliable the 4 cycle engine and three speed transmission made it very simple to operate.

Honda's success came from taking the motorbike international and expanded into markets in Asia and Europe. They painstakingly developed a stronghold in the U.S. by opening their first shop in California. This started the snowball rolling downhill and by 1960 they had another 75 motorcycle shops all over the United States. The amazing fact is all of the new dealerships turned out to be a huge success.

As a top motorcycle manufacturer Honda was instrumental in the creation of the (Motorcycle Industry Council) and the (Motorcycle Safety Council). These facts were big factors in gaining the trust of the American consumers.

The success of Honda grew throughout the 70s as they continued to manufacture performance and high quality motorcycles that the American people loved. The speed and performance built into Honda's high quality motorcycles lead them to great success.
