The roller coaster was designed by Herbert Paul Schmeck of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. Its serial number is 86. In 1930, it was installed (under the name Roller Coaster ) into Lakewood Park, in Waterbury, Connecticut. Frank F. Hoover oversaw the construction. The coaster operated in Connecticut for only five years before being closed and moved to Canobie Lake Park. Rechristened the Yankee Cannonball, named in commemoration of the American Civil War, the coasters train colors were originally blue and gray, representing the Union and Confederacy sides of the conflict, all being united on the rides red, white, and blue superstructure. When the ride was movie to Canobie, each section was shortened by six inches to help it fit the area planned for it. The rethemed ride opened for the 1936 season and has operated continuously since, though the lift hill was destroyed by Hurricane Carol in 1954, and it was closed for repair during the following season. In November 1936, representatives of the Spanish Republic (Spanish Republicans, or Loyalists) began a campaign to hire American pilots to fight in the Spanish Civil War. The author contends that intense competition for control of the national political economy between the free North and slave South produced secession, which in turn spawned the formation of two new states, a market-oriented northern Union and a southern Confederacy in which government controls on the economy were much more important. During the Civil War, the American state both expanded and became the agent of northern economic development. After the war ended, however, tension within the Republican coalition led to the abandonment of Reconstruction and to the return of former Confederates to political power throughout the South. As a result, American state expansion ground to a halt during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
