Why pipe network complexity may be the least of your problems
Requirements for some chemical, oil or gas pipe transfer systems may require extremely complex and logistically challenging pipe networks. Whilst such formations can be easier to organise than might at first seem possible, there are other important long-term considerations such as the pipe material's resistance to corrosion and the quality of weld connections.
A variety of different types of pipe fittings can be sourced from specialist suppliers in order to construct any type of pipe network, regardless of size or complexity. Where the network needs to curve, for example, induction bends can be fitted, whilst complete corner turns on the other hand can be facilitated through the use of elbows. At the same time, concentric reducers can be employed to connect together pipes of differing widths.
Whilst such design solutions can be available for different pipe network systems, it is however also vital that the material the pipes, pipe fittings and connecting flanges are made from is capable of withstanding corrosion.
There are different types of corrosion and these can be strongly influenced by the atmospheric conditions in which the pipes are laid. Pitting, whereby extremely small areas along the pipe network start to corrode, and stress corrosion, in which connections along the network start to crack can both, for example, affect pipe systems that are subjected to chlorides in the atmosphere. In such instances it would be advisable to choose a highly corrosion-resistant material such as super duplex steel. The quality of the welding along the pipe network is also important to ensure a tight, secure fit for all connections. For industrial strength stainless steels such as super duplex, the ultra-precise joints afforded by gas tungsten arc welding are recommended.
