How to accessorise, nautical style

The nautical look is always popular in spring and summer thanks to its fresh, preppy feel. It's a look that you can embrace whole-heartedly from top to toe or just incorporate accents according to your taste. With the right shoes and accessories, it's actually really easy to give an outfit a touch of sailor girl style. Start with a plain vest top or tee and wear with jeans, crops or a sweet A-line skirt and then see what a difference you can make.

These are the main things you need to consider if you want to add a touch of nautical style to your outfit.

Key colours

The classic nautical palette is of course red, white and blue. Any two of these colours in combination is sufficient for a little nautical touch; though if you really love this trend then go for all three together. Choose a pattern incorporating two or three colours, or choose a different colour from the trio for different accessories, e.g. white shoes, red belt, blue bag. Navy can look a little old fashioned so there's no reason why you can't go for powder blue or a more eye-popping cobalt colour instead.

Pretty patterns

Stripes (particularly blue and white stripes) are the pattern usually associated with sailor style. If your outfit is perfectly plain then stripey accessories in nautical colours are an easy way to add interest, whether you go for vertical or horizontal stripes. If you prefer something a little less geometric, large spots or ditsy dots make a really cute alternative. You'll find lots of spotty shoes and accessories around at the moment, from polka dot wedges and ballerina pumps to clutch bags and cross body bags. For something even quirkier, star, bird and heart prints will all give a modern twist on the trend.

The devil's in the detail

Sometimes tiny touches can make a big difference, and this is where jewellery can really come into its own. Think about the shining buttons on an admiral's uniform and it's clear that gold accessories will really make your nautical colour palette really pop. Gold necklaces and bracelets will add some sparkle (gold-effect is fine). Neat bow trims on shoes, hair bands and hair clips all fit into this prim, preppy look perfectly, as does anything with an anchor or swallow motif.
