I am not a mechanic but I have a lot of experience buying used Hondas. I have owned about 12 different used Hondas (one was brand new) and I know what to look for.

The first thing to look at is abuse. Hondas were and are still popular among street racers and younger drivers. Even a 4 door Honda Accord could have been modified. If you find any aftermarket parts on the car (other than wheels) then I would be a little weary about purchasing it.

I would much rather buy a Honda with a manual transmission because they can be more reliable and they are fun to drive. However, if the car was raced, the transmission takes a beating. I know friends who used to race their Hondas/Acuras and they would develop a 3rd gear grind. Make sure you go through all of the gears on a test drive and rev up the engine when shifting. Sometimes you won't hear/feel the grind unless you are at a higher RPM.

The next thing you need to find out is if the timing belt has been changed (this controls the timing of the valves). This is a maintenance item but if it has not been done it can be expensive ($600-$1000). If it has not been done and you continue to drive the car, you risk the belt breaking. Once that happens you will have extensive engine damage (this has happened to my parents Civic).

Since a lot of Hondas have been modified you will need to look at the paint very carefully. I bought an Acura from a local Acura dealership and didn't realize that it was in some accidents until much later after buying the car. It started to rust at the top of the windshield (due to a bad windshield replacement) and I noticed some areas with overspray. I pulled a CarFax when I was trying to sell it and found out the truth. The car ran good but I had to significantly lower the price to sell it. I took a large hit on that mistake. ALWAYS get a CarFax and make sure to look for paint overspray or color variations in the finish.

Buying a used Honda can be a great purchase if you can't afford a new car because of their reliability. But like any car, if they were not maintained properly, you could have a lot of expensive repairs due to neglect and abuse.
