Luxury in Swedish Lapland in the Arctic Circle
What do we look for in a modern holiday? Rest? Lazing on a beach? Or is it simply an escape from our safe, modern lives. Stress is often quoted as one of the biggest reasons for booking a holiday nowadays, but does laying on a beach really pull your thoughts away from the day to day at home? If it doesn't, read on…
The Sarek National Park is one of the true remaining wilderness regions left in Europe. Sarek is within the UNESCO region of Laponia and is protected. Motor vehicles are not allowed into Sarek and you can wander for days without seeing anyone, summer or winter. Scattered around Sarek are the smaller, but equally beautiful National Parks of Padjelanta, Muddus and Stora sjöfallet.
Having these wonderful places to visit just a three hour direct flight from Heathrow followed by a 300km drive is all very well, but what do you do when you are there? Sarek is wild and foreboding, especially in the winter. Step forward Årrenjarka Fjällby. Årrenjarka Fjällby is a mountain holiday village based in the Arctic Circke just 17km from Kvikkjokk, at the base of all the national parks in this region. The tourist industry in this region is still a fledgling operation, but this fact has passed Årrenjarka by without a thought.
Årrenjarka has been in the current owners family since 1811 and the holiday village was established in 1969 and is now owned and run by Gun Mannberg and her partner Lars Lindqvist. Gun and Lars live on one side of the island, where all the family members involved with the holiday village have their own private houses and gardens. Gun took over Årrenjarka from her father in 1989 and since then, the island ‘come peninsular' sitting at the edge of Lake Saggat, has gone from strength to strength.
The central area of the holiday village covers around 25 acres and the total area some 1600 acres. Included in the central area are a number of holiday cabins of which 55 beds are available with showers and toilets inside the cabins. Six of these cabins are luxury standard and are located almost at the water's edge where you simply open the patios doors and three paces later, you find yourself at the edge of the river. The remaining 70 beds are available in modern cabins that are circled around a modern service house with full toilet and shower facilities.
Årrenjarka also has a very impressive old log cabin style conference centre, a very large, very modern restaurant & bar and reception building, a small shop and a large grill house which is a large wooden tipi with a small bar and open fire grill inside. Some of the cabins even have their own saunas. The holiday village has 17 snowmobiles available for hire, 17 husky dogs to take guests out to the mountains, boats and canoes to paddle out onto the lake in summer, horses and even their own miniature petrol station. With all these facilities available just next door to Swedish Lapland's National Parks, the activities, views, peace and quiet and adventure available at Årrenjarka are second to none in the region.
The alternatives to lying on a beach for your stress busting holiday could include a guided snowmobile tour outside of the national parks, where you can cruise over the vast untouched mountain areas surrounding Årrenjarka after some training and instruction on how to drive a snowmobile. How about a dog sledding tour? Travel across frozen lakes and up over into the national parks and wolverine territory driving your own husky dog sled, or if you prefer simply riding as a passenger. For the active, a cross country ski trip over a river or a lake and for the really fit amongst us, try your hand at up-hill skiing.
Snowshoe trekking through the local forest regions and searching for animal tracks is an active, but very peaceful way to spend a day and ice fishing out on a lake gives you a taste of the true Sami winter lifestyle. Summertime has its own special attractions and in addition to the excellent fishing, you can take a boat or canoe out on the lake for few hours, ride a horse across the shallow areas of the lakeside or simply go for a hike up the nearest mountain for an unrivalled view of the vast National Park regions.
There are some special events close to Årrenjarka and one of the most famous is the Jokkmokk Winter Market which is a event to add to your stay in Lapland and the holiday village. There is daily transport available from the village to take you to and from Jokkmokk and February is one of the best months to stay in the Arctic Circle. The long winter nights are beginning to draw out into bright clear days and the weather, whilst cold, is dry, bright and invigorating. You can combine some igloo building while you are there and even stay a night in the Tree Hotel on your way back home.
