Snowmobile Handlebar Muffs

Riding in winter can be enjoyable and challenging but it isn't impossible. The first thing to address is visibility as the grey and dark days make it hard for you to see and likewise makes it hard for other vehicles to see you. Make sure all your lights are clean and that your visor isn't steaming up, an anti-fog device is ideal at this time of year. Although they aren't sexy a high visibility belt or waistcoat are a good idea as they make you stand out in the difficult conditions.
Of course staying warm is essential in the winter as you really are facing the elements. Layers are the way forward and thermals are also a good idea. If you are planning on long trips and a lot of riding then you may as well invest in some heated clothing. A heated body warmer is ideal for keeping your core body temperature up which in turn will help keep the rest of you warm. Extremities like your hands tend to get cold quickly so heated gloves or handle bar grips are a boon. Combine these with handle bar muffs or hand shields just to keep the wind off your hands and you will be surprised how warm it keeps you.
Now when it comes to the actual riding, smooth and steady is the way to progress and take it easy with the front brake of course. For car drivers once the road is gritted it is reasonably safe however that isn't necessarily the case for two wheels. A freshly gritted but otherwise dry road can act like marbles as the balls of grit can collect at roundabout entrances and if you brake on them you could come a cropper so beware.
When in very slippery conditions don't be tempted to ride with your feet down. You may feel a bit more secure but you've actually got less control and if you should go over you'll break an ankle. When the bike goes sideways in difficult conditions just steer gently into the slide. Don't close the throttle but ease off a little bit if the wheel is spinning, but generally keep it nailed. If you have ridden off road you will know that if our riding technique works on slippery mud it will work on ice or snow.
If you are feeling really adventurous and want to venture out in the snow then stick to the fresh snow. Hills can be a challenge especially if the ice has compacted and results in you just spinning up. If you find yourself in these extreme conditions then it is better to tackle such hills on the grass verge, as long as you've seen it pre-snow and know there are no great hidden surprises. A useful tip which is only for snowy conditions is to drop your rear tyre pressure by a couple of pounds as this will help traction on the snow.
For regular winter riding then is it a good idea to buy an older machine that you aren't too bothered about dropping and getting filthy dirty in the winter weather. Kawasaki's GT550 is an ideal tool for this as it is cheap and almost indestructible. Or an old BMW that will run forever is another option as you don't want to be on a bike that you are concerned about damaging as a little spill at some point is likely.
Winter riding comes down to common sense and taking on board as much advice as you can from seasoned all year round riders. Make sure you take your sunglasses or a dark visor as low winter sun can be hard work especially when there is a glare coming off the road. When really cold, stop and warm up as your concentration will suffer and when slithering about on the snow concentration is paramount. Have a hot drink, stand under the warm air dryer and eat some stodgy food.
It isn't something to be scared of rather a challenge to embrace and once you get one winter under your belt you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
