Before we get started, let me say that buying the right helmet is not rocket science. There are, however, a couple of things you should understand. Luckily, they're very basic and simple. So let's boil it down to the basics.
The only two things you really need to understand about getting the right helmet for you are rigidity and fit. Rigidity is simply how much the helmet "gives" when it's impacted. This determines how much cushioning your head gets. Helmet fit determines how equally the impact is distributed around your head.
This article will help you determine how rigid your helmet should be for you and your riding style and the conditions in which you ride. The next one will help you determine which helmets match your needs and another will address how to ensure the best fit possible.
If your moving head is stopped too rapidly by another object, damage occurs. If your moving head is stopped more slowly, less or no damage occurs. The easiest example I can use is to imagine wrapping your head with steel plate and slamming your forehead into a wall. Ouch. Now imagine wrapping your head in your favorite foamy pillow and doing the same thing. Less ouch. One slows down the momentum of your head before it is stopped and the other doesn't. Simple, right? Rigid steel would be bad, soft pillow would be better.
Your helmet's job is simply to replace your pillow. To slow down your head as much as possible before it come to a complete stop.
Keeping the pillow and steel wrapped head scenario going, lets try another imaginary experiment. This time instead of a wall let's try something a bit more drastic. Like a knife. This time the big "ouch" would come from the pillow because it's not rigid enough to keep the knife from penetrating it and possibly your skull. The steel, being very rigid would not give at all. Thereby not only stopping the knife point, but distributing it's impact over a much larger area. A soft pillow would be bad, hard steel would be better. Makes sense, doesn't it?
Your helmet's job is simply to replace your steel hat. To keep unwanted objects from penetrating it and damaging your head. .
You really can't wear either a pillow or a steel plate when you're out on your motorcycle, quad, snowmobile or whatever. Neither would do much good in a real life crash anyway. One's too soft, the other's too rigid. So we have to find something in between. This is the hard part.
To get it right, you should consider everything about your riding. Take an objective look at how, what and where you ride. Do you cruise casually down deserted highways? Or do you blaze down Main Street in rush hour traffic at ludicrous speed? Since very few riders do only one or the other, you'll need to do a little bit of risk assessment for yourself. Of all the places you ride, where are you most concerned about crashing? At what speeds are you going when you're there? How many objects are there that you might slide into?
If you ride mostly in areas that have lots of things to smack into during a crash, and if you ride those areas at some speed, you might consider getting a more rigid helmet to protect from the edges of objects you could hit. Things like curbs and sign posts, for instance. If you ride only on dry lake beds, you may want something less rigid that will absorb more impact and allow less shock to the brain.
A helmet that is too soft may not give adequate protection in a hard, direct hit. Unfortunately, one that is too rigid may not cushion enough of the blow to prevent injury in instances which a less rigid helmet would.
The trick is to use your brain (you're going to all this trouble to protect it, you might as well us it) and make the best decision you can after taking everything above into consideration.
There are varying standards for motorcycle helmets that manufacturers can be held too. They each have different rigidity requirements. Some will allow less, some want more. Some people believe that one standard requires too much rigidity, other folks believe one doesn't require enough.
But this article is long enough already, so I'll add another one in a day or two that will address those issues. I'll title it Buying a Helmet; Decision 2. I'll follow that one with one on getting the proper fit. It will be Buying a Helmet; Decision (you guessed it) 3.
I started riding 39 years ago. My first bike was an SL 70 in 1960. Motorcycles have been a part of my life ever since. I've owned cruisers, sport bikes and a Gold Wing for street riding. For dirt riding I've has Suzuki's, Yamaha's, and Honda's. Long ago in a desert far, far away, I also had a Bultaco and a Husquavarna.
I decided to write about helmets because some people believe that if you don't wear the same helmet they have, you're going to die in the gentlest tip over. I'd like riders to understand that riding style, riding conditions, head shape and other factors determine which helmet suits each person.

Yamaha Phazer $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Phazer is the name of a model of snowmobile produced by the Yamaha Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1984, it became an immensely popular model for Yamaha and spawned several followup models (such as the Phazer II, Phazer Deluxe, Phazer Mountain Lite, Phazer FX, and Phazer GT); its design features were also incorporated into other models (such as latermodel Exciters as well as the Venture Lite). Of particular note on the Phazer is way in which the headlight is directly connected to the handlebars so that the headlight follows the direction of a turn. This feature was certainly new among Yamaha models when it was introduced in 1984, and Yamaha claims that it and other features began a new era in snowmobiling. The Phazer was always known for its sharp handling, freerevving 485cc fancooled engine, solid reliability (most notably on Phazer II), light weight, and most importantly, value. It was not so well known for its ride quality, however, as with many Yamahas of the day. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F.
