Loving Canadian Winter

More and more are finding Canada a great place to spend winter. Canada offers visitors a wealth of wonders from exciting carnivals to excellent sports facilities besides the usual ski and snow scenes.

Indoor and outdoor ice rinks practically everywhere but Ottawa holds the longest one in the world which stretches four miles.  The snowmobile was first developed in Quebec and spread in neighboring countries but it still enjoys immense popularity within Canada. Besides snowmobile clubs the marked paths for snow machines add to the fun weekend adventure. Snowshoeing represents a great winter sport pastime. Snowshoeing trails are opening up in a number of locations.

A foot or two of ice on Canadian lakes and rivers in winter hasn't deterred fishermen from practicing their favorite sport. Quebec is home to a tiny village called La Perade where fisher folk haul off shacks to the ice and snare numerous tomcods.

Several ski vacation spots have slopes blocked off strictly for tobogganing. Wintertime is extra busy too because of the carnivals complete with dog and snowshoe racing plus ice castles and endless drinks and food. There is no time to be bored amid Canadian carnivals at wintertime because all of them do not disappoint.  Events that hold the most appeal include the international contests that have athletes coming over from different countries.

Festivals are held to showcase sled dog races and snowshoe classic. Hunting for precious antiques or odd handicrafts in remote shops happens as usual whether it is summer or winter.  Artwork by Indians and Eskimos specifically soap rock carvings are quite popular souvenir items. For some cultural appreciation visitors have the symphony doing several concerts and the ballet company shows.

In Montreal theater can be watched in either French or English and then there are the delightful Vancouver musicians and opera that have amused many travelers.  Priceless treasures can be seen any day of the year in the Toronto as well as Saint John and Vancouver and Ottawa museums. Night spots in Canada's lively cities range from small discotheque to lavish night clubs and most hotels offer their own entertainment.  Take a break from the unforgiving weather by hiding out in the below ground Montreal city.

Hotels plus railway stations and theaters along with shops and restaurants are connected with the Le Metro subway and apartments as well as major office complexes by miles and miles of tunnels. Underground development is also catching on several other cities, notably Toronto and Winnipeg. Walking by some crystal clear snow can easily make the day of a tourist.  Tourists have tons to fill their bellies from the fine steaks of Saskatchewan to the Quebec French food fare to the British Columbia tasty delights.
